The vulture and the little girl, also known as “The Struggling Girl”, is a famous photograph byKevin Carterwhich first appeared inThe New York Timeson 26 March 1993. It is a photograph of a frailfamine-strickenboy, initially believed to be a girl, who had collapsed in the foreground with avultureeyeing him from nearby. The child was reported to be attempting to reach aUnited Nationsfeeding center about a half mile away inAyod, Sudan,(nowSouth Sudan), in March 1993. The picture won thePulitzer Prize for Feature Photographyaward in 1994. Carter died by suicide four months after winning the prize.
